4 Reasons to Pursue a Healthcare Career in Canada

Posted by: Gavin Au-Yeung Date: September 14, 2020 Category: Blog

Healthcare workers have always been an essential part of the Canadian workforce. The healthcare talent in Canada increases every year as more internationally trained healthcare professionals arrive in the country. Healthcare in Canada is a regulated occupation. These regulations may result in barriers which prevent internationally trained professionals from returning to their desired career. However, exploring alternative healthcare careers is a great option to consider. Some examples are: Health Educators, Public Health Inspectors, Nurse Aides, Dental Assistants and much more.

With that being said, there are plenty of reasons for why internationally trained healthcare workers should pursue a career in the Canadian healthcare system.

1. Healthcare Occupations are in-Demand

There are many healthcare-related jobs which are in-demand in the near future. This demand for healthcare workers is because of increased retirement rates and new job prospects. Furthermore, the increased retirement rate aligns with Canada’s aging population. In fact, we can expect seniors who are 65 years or older to account for 23 per cent of Canada’s population by the year 2030. This is a stark contrast to 2014, when seniors accounted for only 15.6 per cent of the population. Healthcare workers will need to step up in a big way in order to accommodate an increasingly aging population. Demand for healthcare workers will continue to rise in the future. A career in healthcare will definitely provide great job prospects and stability.

2. A Career in Healthcare Provides a Wide Range of Opportunities

We often think about the more well-known healthcare occupations, such as: doctors, nurses, and dentists. In reality, having professional healthcare experience prepares you for a wide range of alternative careers in the sector. As demand grows, many new services will become increasingly common. For example, with Canada’s aging population, we can expect to see more opportunities for care workers who tend to seniors.

3. Healthcare Workers Have Good Mobility

Regardless of where you are in Canada, healthcare skills are in-demand across the nation. In other words, trained healthcare professionals will be appreciated in every province. As internationally trained newcomers, the skills you possess are vital for Canada’s success. It is best practice to consult local regulatory bodies before making any moves within the country.

4. Work in a Meaningful Career

Perhaps the most important reason why anyone would pursue a career in healthcare is because of the meaningful work being done. Healthcare workers make positive impact on the lives of the people they treat. Working in a meaningful career can also be beneficial for your mental health. Studies have shown that individuals who find their work meaningful also report higher job satisfaction. As a healthcare worker in Canada, you will be a part of Canada’s publicly funded healthcare system which supports the lives of all Canadians. Now that’s what we call making a difference!
